Our Story

About InsectDiscover

We're building the world's most accessible, accurate, and engaging insect encyclopedia — one species at a time.

Why Insects Matter

Insects are the unsung heroes of our planet. Comprising over 80% of all known animal species, they pollinate roughly 75% of the world's flowering plants, decompose organic waste to enrich soil, and form the foundation of countless food webs. Without insects, ecosystems would collapse, agriculture would falter, and life as we know it would fundamentally change.

Yet despite their critical importance, insects remain profoundly misunderstood. Most people can name only a handful of species, and public awareness of insect decline — one of the most pressing ecological crises of our time — remains alarmingly low.

Our Mission

InsectDiscover exists to bridge the gap between entomological science and everyday curiosity. We believe that understanding breeds appreciation, and appreciation drives conservation. Our mission is threefold:

  • Educate — Make verified entomological knowledge freely available to students, teachers, researchers, and anyone with a spark of curiosity.
  • Inspire — Reveal the extraordinary adaptations, behaviours, and life histories that make every insect species remarkable.
  • Conserve — Raise awareness about insect biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it for future generations.
🔬

Accurate Taxonomy

Every entry follows current entomological standards — order, family, genus, and species — reviewed and updated as classification evolves.

🌍

Global Coverage

Insects from every inhabited continent, spanning tropical rainforests, temperate woodlands, arid deserts, freshwater habitats, and arctic tundra.

Who This Is For

InsectDiscover is designed for anyone who wants to learn about insects:

  • Students — Whether you're working on a biology assignment, preparing for an exam, or writing a research paper, our directory provides reliable, well-structured information you can trust.
  • Educators — Use InsectDiscover as a teaching resource. Browse by order to explore taxonomy, or use the random feature to spark classroom discussions.
  • Entomologists & Researchers — While not a replacement for primary literature, our directory offers a quick reference for species data, distribution, and ecological notes.
  • Nature Enthusiasts — Encountered an interesting bug in your garden? Use our search to identify it, learn about its habits, and discover what makes it special.
  • Photographers & Artists — Our gallery and species descriptions can serve as reference material for nature photography, illustration, and creative projects.

Our Approach to Quality

We prioritise accuracy over volume. Every insect in our directory has been reviewed for taxonomic correctness, and we continuously update entries as scientific understanding evolves. Our data includes:

  • Full taxonomic classification (order, family, genus, species)
  • Verified common and scientific names
  • Habitat and geographic distribution data
  • Diet and feeding behaviour information
  • Size ranges and physical characteristics
  • Conservation status where applicable
  • Fascinating fun facts backed by scientific literature

The Numbers

The insect world is staggeringly vast. Scientists have described over 1 million insect species, but estimates suggest there may be 5 to 10 million species in total — most still awaiting discovery. Insects have thrived on Earth for over 400 million years, predating dinosaurs by nearly 200 million years. They inhabit every continent except the open ocean, and their combined biomass outweighs that of all humans many times over.

Our directory currently catalogues hundreds of species across all major insect orders, and we add new entries regularly. Our goal is to build the most comprehensive, freely accessible insect resource on the web.

Get Involved

InsectDiscover is a living project, and we welcome contributions from the community:

  • Report errors — Spotted incorrect taxonomy, a wrong distribution range, or an outdated conservation status? Let us know.
  • Suggest species — Know of a remarkable insect we should feature? Tell us about it.
  • Collaborate — We're open to partnerships with researchers, educators, museums, and conservation organisations.

Reach out to us on our contact page — we'd love to hear from you.
